The mandatory equipment list is created to help insure a safer race. We realize the desire to “go light” but safety should not be compromised when building your equipment packs for this race. This list is the bare bones minimum required, you may decide to carry more. Make sure you have checked the equipment list thoroughly. We will be strict; it will be very difficult for you to find equipment at packet pick up. For your safety we cannot allow your team to compete without your complying completely. Required equipment will be available prior to December 18th th at the ARH head quarters, 330 cooke Street, Honolulu, HI 96813. If you are registered for the race you will receive a 10% one time discount for all purchased items.

Equipment required to be carried throughout race (each team)

  • audible signaling device (whistle) (1 per every team)
  • knife with locking blade (2.4” min) (1 per every team)
  • survival mirror (1 per every team)
  • survival blanket (1 per every team)
  • compass (1 per every team)
  • emergency strobe light in H 2 O proof container (1 per every team)
  • chem. light (3 – each competitor)
  • first aid kit in H 2 O proof container with appropriate items for 1 day of wilderness travel (1 per every team)
  • cell phone in sealed, H 2 O proof container (1 per every team)
  • water proof matches or lighter (1 per every team)
  • H 2 O proof map case (1 per every team)
  • race passport (1 per every team)
  • flashlight (1 per every team)
  • 4 nylon zip ties (6” min length) per team.

Biking Equipment (each competitor)

  • white head lamp (must be on during “night operations”)
  • rear, red taillight (must be on during “night operations”)
  • bike helmet (certified, appropriate biking helmet in good condition)
  • reflector band or tape (attached to the road side arm or leg of rider)

Climbing/Mountaineering Equipment (each competitor actually climbing)

  • Harness
  • 2 ascenders
  • 2 daisy chains / sling (30cm min)
  • gloves as required for rappelling
  • 3 locking carabineer
  • descent device (ATC, Stop, Brake bar, or similar)
  • 1 Prusik knot or Klemheist Knot (min. 6mm cord, length as req. for back up)

Paddling/Swimming/Diving Equipment (each competitor)

  • mask w/ snorkel (1 per team)
  • bailing device (sponge, bail, pump, etc. 1 per team)

  • PFD's can also be rented from Two Good Kayak.

Provided Equipment (each team)

  • Race Passports with UTM coordinates and map.
  • Team event ID Jersey will be provided at packet pickup and must be worn by each competitor throughout the race.

Illegal Operations/Equipment (on race course)

  • GPS, or other electronic navigation system
  • cell phones or two way radio (except in emergency)
  • any outside assistance (except as provided by race staff)
  • firearms
  • drugs or alcohol
  • Sails, parachutes, paragliders, and paraponts.
